As you may well know, the San Francisco Giants have beaten the Texas Rangers this evening in five games to win the World Series. The Rangers are easily coming off the best season in franchise history, due to the fact that they had never won a post season playoff series until this year. I have never been a fan of the Texas Rangers as I maybe should be due to the fact I have lived in Oklahoma my whole life and since most Okies typically cheer for the Dallas-Fort Worth professional teams.
I was taken aback when the Rangers won the their divisional series against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rangers were huge underdogs compared to the team that outplayed the hated New York Yankees the majority of the season. After upsetting the rays, instead of having the typical champagne celebration in the locker room while media takes video and pictures around them, the Rangers substituted ginger ale into their party. Why? Since their star player, outfielder Josh Hamilton has had alcohol and drug problems in the past, and has overcome them through rehab. He has chosen to be clean from those temptations and wouldn’t have been able to celebrate with his Rangers family if they used champaign. Since most players on the Rangers roster have never experienced the thrill of enjoying a champagne bath and finally had the opportunity to take advantage of it, yet passed it up knowing the history and the long road Hamilton has taken to be clean, was a great sign of character for the Rangers ball club. The baseball world and average fans like me now have a great respect for the players and managers of the Texas Rangers. They included Hamilton and acted no different with the ginger ale than they would have if it was champagne. Great gesture Rangers and good luck next season. Maybe the taste of the ginger ale will be about five times better after you have won the World Series.
